Creating a Vision
Do you have dissatisfaction in the status quo? I want to tell you that is a great creative state. It means you have something in you that is waiting to get out in the world. I don’t want to work with people who just conform and fit into the world. I know for a fact you can be successful using the material I am going to give you because you aspire for better things in life.
You are ambitious and want to build a great life for yourself but you also don’t want to do it at the expense of sacrificing your life.
I don’t know if you have read the book “4-hour workweek” by Tim Ferris. But there is a whole bunch of new generation that works from anywhere in the world, travel where they want to and are able to make a lot of money. My dream has always been to do that. I feel chained in cubicles and hated office politics. I also hated the fact that I didn’t have any control over my career. Someone else was making the decisions. Sometimes I had brilliant ideas that were killed. I wanted to start a business but did not want to risk a lot of money.
By starting an online business I can live the life of my dreams and also make the same money I will make in a job and also have the freedom to be wherever I want. I studied a tonne of material and created the website – richmomsworld.com, which you probably had a chance to look at.
I want to teach you the exact same process I followed to start this business
1) Use your strengths and passion to identify an idea
2) Validate the idea in the market, find out if people are really interested in what you have to offer
3) Create an online offering of your idea which will generate revenue.
So to start, the first exercise in identifying an idea is to come up with a vision for yourself in 5 years. What do you want in 5 years? What would your ideal day be without any restrictions?
For me, it would be working only during the time when my son is in school. I really want to be there to pick up him when he returns and spend time bringing him up. I also want the money and liberty to live anywhere I want. I want to build multiple sources of income. That is how I started this online business. That is how I have a book deal from PMI on project management. That is how I became friends with Jill Salzman from Founding Moms and starting an offline meetup with her in NJ. I am in initial stages of building my ideal life. But I started on it and I know I have complete control over it.
I am not reliant on someone else to give me raises, promotions or opportunities. I am not against going for jobs, but I think we should have several sources of income to protect ourselves in the long run.
I think we have to dream up our ideal life and instill work into it, rather than work all our life and put in a few our dreams into it.
Now coming back to your exercise. I want you to think if you had all the money and all the time in the world, what would you do? What will your ideal day be in 5 years?
Some of the things to think about include what is it that you absolutely detest about your life right now ? Your ideal life would be opposite of it.
In corporations, we work 50 hours to get a promotion where we will end up working 60 hours. I knew I never wanted that.
Creating your ideal life is an important step in coming up with an idea that uses your passion. So take your time and let me know what your ideal life would be.
Then we will drill down and figure out all your passions and ideas using which you can start your business
Feel free to reply and share any other comments or thoughts you would have.
